Lake Lewisville Toll Bridge Opens New Opportunities

July 28th, 2009

OncLewisville Bridge Logoe upon a time the towns of Garza and Little Elm were separated by just a few miles.  That changed when Lake Dallas was built in the 1920’s.  What had been a short drive became a long roundabout trip.  The town of Garza changed its name to Lake Dallas and the two towns have been separated by a lake ever since, firs it was Lake Dallas and then an  expanded lake… Lake Lewisville.   That separation is all about to change again with the opening of the Lake Lewisville Toll Bridge in August.

The new toll bridge will suddenly make the I35-E corridor more accessible to people living in Little Elm, Oak Point and other communities on the eastern shore of the lake.   The new bridge will link up Swisher Road in Lake Dallas with El Dorado Parkway in Little Elm.  What used to take 35 to 40 minutes will now be a 5 minute drive.    This new convenience will also mean new opportunities for businesses located on I35E.    Denton car dealer, Bill Utter Ford has already purchased and posted a billboard just east of the entrance to the bridge.

Just the Uttle Side of the Lake!

Just the Utter Side of the Lake!

The bridge will be dedicated this Thursday, July 30 at 9am and will be followed with a community celebration on  Saturday August 1st featuring a 5K Fun Run and Family Fun Walk.  Participants will have the chance to run or walk the bridge beginning at 8:00 Saturday morning before the bridge formally opens to traffic a few days later.  This bridge has been a long time in the planning (there was even a political candidate who advocated a tunnel under the lake years ago!) and it will bring change to both sides of the lake.  Just as the construction of the old Lake Dallas brought change to the area over 80 years ago.

Cash For Clunkers Kicks Off… But You Better Hurry!

July 27th, 2009

Today (July 27, 2009) is the first official day of the government’s Cash For Clunkers Program.  One billion dollars has been allocated to get vehicles made between 1984 and 2001 off the roads.   There are three objectives for this campaign:

  1. More fuel efficient vehicles replacing the older less fuel  efficient models will reduce our dependency on foreign oil.
  2. Newer models have higher emission standards and are better for the environment.
  3. Selling more cars will be good for the economy.  This program is expected to help sell over 200,000 vehicles in  the next few weeks.

The next few weeks is the kicker.  The CARS program runs through November 1, 2009 or whenever the $1 Billion dollars allocated is gone.  Estimates range from 1 to 4 weeks before all of the money has been claimed.  The good news is this is a 4 year program and Cash for Clunkers will be back next year.  But if you want to buy a new car and take advantage of this opportunity…. you need to act now.

Bill Utter Ford in Denton has set up a special website www.fordcashforclunkers.org to explain the program to help you understand if and how you qualify.  There are links to other websites with additional information and links to the Bill Utter Ford web site where you can review all of the current inventory.    There was a rush of activity today at Bill Utter Ford.  Factory incentives at Bill Utter Ford make it possible to save up to $4,500 with the cash for clunkers rebate and up to $6,000 in factory rebates on the Ford F-150.  Combined that means a possible savings of $10,500 on an F-150 and there are great incentives on almost every other Ford model as well.

This is a great time to buy a new car and with the cash for clunkers program things just got even better.   But it won’t last long!

Marketing Reflections on the 4th of July in Denton, Texas

July 6th, 2009

The 4th of July always lives up to the old adage “Hot as a Firecracker on the 4th of July”… and it was!  But I want to reflect on the traditions that are Denton on the 4th.  There are many things that make Denton is a unique and n interesting place to live.   Our Independence Day is one of those because in part it is not unique or differtnet it is instead traditional. The day starts with the Liberty Fun Run at North Lakes Park, followed by the parade through the downtown square, and old fashioned 4th at Civic Center Park (I have a hard time calling it Quakertown Park) and capping it off with the Kiwanis Club Fireworks Show at Fouts Field.

These are such great events, even if it is hot.  The parade and fireworks show are perhaps two of the best community events of the year.  From a marketing perspective, The Crouch Group, recommends the parade as one of the best investments (it’s free) to get your name infront of the community.  The more creative your presentation the better and that maybe as simple as blowing bubbles from your vehicle.

The fireworks show is also a good marketing investment for a business.  (No, I am not a member of the Kiwanis Club)  There is a huge crowd inside the stadium and even bigger outside.  There are a myriad of opportunities to market to this gathering.  Some are paid sponsorships through the Kiwanis Club, sponsorships can include video, name mentions and program ads.  These paid sponosrships also help to benefit the Kiwanis Club Children’s Clinic a worthy cause!  There are also opportunites outside the stadium to think about reaching  the masses with key messages while they are waiting for the show.  Some of those folks are waiting for hours.  A good marketer recognizes that when a large group of people are together… opportunity is at hand.

One final thought on the 4th this year.  I missed the parade. (I did make it to the fireworks show)  Saturday morning we were in Bridgeport picking up my youngest son from the Methodist Church Camp.  The camp was ending with an outdoor worship service.  During the service I looked up and  saw a bald eagle flying overhead.  While I wasn’t in Denton for the parade this year, the site of a Bald Eagle riding the wind currents made up for not getting to see the Phrenology Band make its annual appearance.
