Do you feel like you are highly disorganized or are a major procrastinator?
Fixing the issue may be less complicated than you are imagining. Working on your time management skills may have a huge impact on your organization and productivity. Improving time management means improving your organization and planning skills. The old saying is that “Failing to plan is planning to fail”.
1.Keep Organized
How much time do you waste sifting through papers on your desk every day to find that one document that you need? How much time does that add up to every weak? Setting up a better organization system, or even keeping documents organized on a computer, will help you manage your time better. Having most documents on a computer is even faster than a filing system. You can just search for the document title and automatically shift through thousands of documents. Keeping papers better organized, or digitized, will save hours every year.
2. Use Your Calendar
Technology is great. Your Google Calendar can accessed on a phone, tablet, and your desktop. Apple calendars on all devices sync up immediately. If you are still partial to pen and paper, it’s great too. Most importantly, whichever medium you choose: update and check you calendar. A key piece of good time management is that you stick to a schedule and don’t get side tracked.
3. Schedule, Schedule, Schedule
In “Start Something that Matters” , Blake Mycoskie talks about scheduling everything, including free time with family and friends. That may seem too turbocharged Type A for you. But, there is a bigger point to this: by scheduling everything you respect everything. Work time is only for work. Free time is only for family and friends. If you keep your life organized in this manner, you will be much more focused and much more efficient.
4. Social Media
Just like scheduling work time versus free time, regulate your time on social media. Social media is a double-edged sword. It can be a terrific way to interact with clientele, but it can also be a time-siphoning rabbit hole.
To not permit social media time during the day is not a good idea.
Facebook, for example, rewards businesses for responding to questions quickly. Getting on social media over the course of the day can allow real-time response and connection. However, when you get on social media, just limit your time. Set a five-minute timer to check social media and then get back to the rest of your work.
At its core, time management is about being better organized. If you organize your schedule and documents, stick to the planning and organization, you will quickly see your time management abilities improve. So, don’t procrastinate on making these organization improvements!
