Denton County Cowboy Icon Weldon Burgoon Retiring

November 2, 2016 By Ron Ray

Weldon’s Western Wear Store’s Founder Leaving Retail After 60 Years

Weldon BurgoonWeldon Burgoon, who began riding in rodeos in the 1940’s as a teenager and later founded Weldon’s Western Wear and Saddle Shop, is retiring from the store after more than 60 years. Burgoon has also been a dominant figure in promoting and helping the youth in the North Texas area over the decades. He is a prominent player in the annual Denton County Livestock Youth Fair and Rodeo, the Blue Ribbon Club (a youth-oriented organization promoting Denton County youth in agriculture) and the North Texas Fair and Rodeo.

Weldon’s is located in downtown Denton. It has been a destination for over six decades as the place to go for the best in western apparel, saddle and tack (including custom made saddles by Weldon) and a good story told by Weldon. The beloved stories by Weldon have been preserved on the University of North Texas Oral History book, which is available at the western store. The term, “buy from a real cowboy,” has been the tag line for the store for some time.

Mr. Burgoon recently announced his retirement will be effective at the end of this year, following the store’s annual Christmas season sales event.

The store is currently managed by Weldon’s daughter, Kippie Wilkinson.

During this Christmas season, the Weldon’s theme will be based “your last chance to buy your Christmas presents from a real cowboy.”

For interviews and further information, contact Kippie Wilkinson at 940-282-1921 or shop@weldonswestern.com
