Moneyball and Business: Doing the Most with Limited Resources

What would you give to have Apple’s marketing budget? or Coke’s? or Ford? It would be awesome to have near endless funding to market the company. But short of this, what should you do? The movie and book, Moneyball, tells a story that answers just this question. “For $41 million, you built a playoff team… You won the exact same number of games that the Yankees won, but the Yankees spent $1.4 million per win and you paid $260,000 per win,” says the Boston Red Sox owner to Billy Beane. This making an important point about ROI or Return on Investment. Every company, no matter how big, has to be very diligent about how they spend money to get the most ROI. In Moneyball, Billy…

6 Great Business Practices From TOMS

“Start Something That Matters” Book Review and Business practices TOMS shoes got started 2006 with a journey to another country. Blake Mycoskie went on a trip to Argentina in 2006, taking a much need break from his startup venture. He had been to Argentina before, but on this 2006 trip he learned about a major issue he wasn’t aware of before the trip. Children across the country lacked shoes, even in a moderately well-developed country like Argentina. This exposed their feet to major diseases some possibly life threatening. Blake initial thought was to create a not-for-profit soliciting money or shoes to donate to the children of Argentina. However, organizations like this already existed and struggled to get funds or proper shoes. Then a new concept…

Whether it’s marketing a product, a service, or marketing yourself, marketing attempts to gain buy-in to the idea of whatever it is you are offering. The goal, regardless of trying to sell the latest product or trying to get a potential customer to work with you, marketing is trying to persuade someone’s interest. Aristotle outlined some of the best practices for marketing in the 4th Century BCE. In the Rhetoric, Aristotle discussed how to most effectively persuade someone.  In…

  • Photography in the West Texas Plains

Creating a web site for a client sometimes takes far more than working in the comfort of the office in front of a computer screen. When The Crouch Group recently took on the task of designing a new web site for Kyle Erwin Construction Company, it became clear that custom photography illustrating their services “out in the field” was needed. In this case, that meant a trip to the wind blown West Texas oil fields, where the company was engaged in several major projects. The job was assigned to Brittany Johnston, one of the Crouch Group account executives and a recent graduate of UNT. Among Brittany’s specialties is on-site photography, so off she went to the flat and dusty plains of West Texas. The job…
